Advent Word of the Day - Carry

I woke up this morning, looked at the word I would meditate on throughout the day and instantly I was blessed with a song in my head (I told you song lyrics are my love language). And if you are a child of the 70’s or 80’s then I KNOW this song just flowed through your brain as well. The opening is a harmonic, a cappella masterpiece that must be sung by everyone in the room when its starts.

You know it. Even if you don't know it you know it. Pick your part and sing it with me my Kansas loving friends.

 “Carry on, my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more”
drum drum    drum drum
massive guitar riff (yes you may play air guitar at this point)

This is one of my favorite Christian songs.
What?
What is that you say? It is a secular song you say? Oh contraire mon frère.

“Carry On Wayward Son” was written by guitarist-keyboardist Kerry Livgren of the band Kansas in 1976.

“It’s an autobiographical song,” he explains. “Parallel to my musical career I’ve always been on a spiritual sojourn, looking for truth and meaning. It was a song of self-encouragement. I was telling myself to keep on looking and I would find what I sought.”

Four years later he became a Christian.

“Once I rose above the noise and confusion
Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion
I was soaring ever higher
But I flew too high
Though my eyes could see, I still was a blind man
Though my mind could think, I still was a mad man
I hear the voices when I'm dreaming
I can hear them say” (chorus)

Sometimes I soar too high. Reaching for things that aren’t important. I think I can see, but I am blind without grace. I need to listen to the voice that says “Carry on”

“Masquerading as a man with a reason
My charade is the event of the season
And if I claim to be a wise man, well
It surely means that I don't know
On a stormy sea of moving emotion
Tossed about, I'm like a ship on the ocean
I set a course for winds of fortune
But I hear the voices say” (chorus)

I am the wife of a pastor and in recent years I have been removing my mask. It is a mask of who and what people think I should be and I have been working on who God has made me to be. The more I learn about the bible and faith, the more I don’t know. It has not been an easy road and many tears have been shed but the voice says, “Carry on.”

“Carry on, you will always remember
Carry on, nothing equals the splendor
Now your life's no longer empty
Surely heaven waits for you”

Calling myself a Christian, especially in today’s environment where I tend to get judged before I am known, is not easy. It is a huge responsibility that I don’t take lightly. I study and doubt and wonder and believe. I try to live my faith and nothing equals the splendor.
Now for the rockin’ instrumental part.

Carry on my friends through this season and into the next. Feel your feels. Share who you are and whose you are. Share the radical love of Jesus.

Carry on.

Classic song. Classic picture. Don and Becky circa Christmas 1990. Carrying on for 33+ years.
Now play this and sing at the top of your lungs.
