On the Road Again
The prophet Isaiah, speaking with a Messianic voice said, “I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth; do you not perceive it? (43:19). With the same Messianic voice John the Reveler says, “See, I am making all things new” (21:5). Lately I’ve found myself so distracted by thoughts of what was and anxiety about what will be that I think I’ve missed some of what is: the newness of every day. Jesus walked on the “road to Emmaus” with two people who did not recognize him because their conversations were preoccupied by what had been, and their minds were full of anxiety about what might be. They missed the newness walking with them, and it was only after Jesus took, blessed, broke and gave them bread that their eyes were opened. As Easter people, let us take, bless, break and give all that God has given, and in doing we will know the newness.
