Screams of Faith

Philosopher Michael Novack, author of Belief and Doubt wrote, “doubt is not so much a dividing line that separates people into different camps as it is a razor's edge which runs through every soul.” Many times I put Thomas in the “camp” of doubter, opposite the camp of belief. But as Novack notes, a razor’s edge cut Thomas’ soul. I have judged Thomas’ actions in my thinking whenever I’ve read John 20, and I’ve probably done the same for others, including myself. Doubt is not antithetical to belief. In fact it may be the pathway to deeper faith. Dominic Done said, “Your doubt may be the best thing that has happened to you.” Maybe it is. Maybe it was for Thomas, too.
