You’re Not You When You’re Hungry

In 2010 Mars Wrigley, the candy maker who owns Snickers candy bars launched a new add campaign based on the idea that people are not the same person when they’re hungry. One of the most memorable versions of the commercials included Betty White and Abe Vigoda and introduced the tag phrase “You’re not you when you’re hungry” into the cultural consciousness. Jesus, while teaching his disciples “on the plain” said, “Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled,” and he continued, “Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry.” Maybe Jesus intends what Snickers concludes: you’re not you when you’re hungry. His disciples are to become apostles, transformed by the gospel. Hunger for the gospel changes us.
