Abide in Me

The Season on Lent is a time when we're invited, as Christ followers, to examine our lives and our faith practices to see if we are, as James writes about it, being not hearers who forget but doers who act, knowing we will be blessed in our doing. John Wesley, one of the fathers of Methodism, believed we are "going on to perfection;" not that we would be without fault, mistake, or sin in this life, but that we could be perfected in LOVE for God and one another. If we could genuinely and completely abide in Christ as the branch does in the vine (John 15), then we could perfectly share in the love of God. To merely be doers of the Word is to pursue righteousness (worthiness) by our works, but to respond out of God's unconditional (perfect) love for us in Christ is to share the Word in purposeful doing. This is the more perfect way!
