The "Rest" of God

Pastor Don Long

A hole was knocked in the wall of Deven’s house (but that’s a whole other story, LOL), a pretty big hole, and upon further examination we discovered there’s not a lot of insulation in that old house. We’ll be adding more insulation soon. Why am I telling you about insulation? Because the Prophet Isaiah is talking about insulation. “Woe to you who add house to house and join field to field till no space is left and you live alone in the land.” The people were consuming the land around them, buying it up to put distance between themselves and their neighbors—insulating and isolating themselves. Sometimes, we let Sabbath insulate us, to put distance between us and our neighbor. Jesus saw it. That’s why he told the parable of the Pharisee and the tax-collector recorded in Luke 18; “God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector.” Sabbath, as a practice of holiness, can be a barrier rather than a bridge to loving our neighbor (Commandments 5-100).
