Love Deeper
1 Corinthians 13 is often referred to as “The Love Chapter” of Scripture, and is often read at weddings. It is a beautiful text for weddings (for any occasion, really), as long as you understand that the LOVE referred to (AGAPE love) is a much deeper, intentional, and challenging love than the typical cultural references ideas of love which are passion, sentimentality, and complicated—for sure—but not as challenging. The French teacher, author, and activist of the early 20th century, Simone Weil once wrote: “Humility is attentive patience… and attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity.” Jesus calls his followers to humbleness, which, in my estimation, can be described as “attentive patience which we generously give of ourselves to others.” Loving deeper is challenging; it is counter cultural; it is counter intuitive, and it is the purest expression of God’s desire for us.
