Easter Sunday
Easter is the story of God’s faithfulness! The American short story writer, journalist, poet, and American Civil War veteran, Ambrose Bierce, in his book “The Devil's Dictionary" (named one of "The 100 Greatest Masterpieces of American Literature"), wrote, “fidelity, n. A virtue peculiar to those who are about to be betrayed.” Jesus knew what it was to be betrayed by many, including those closest to him. Yet, knowing this would happen, he washed the feet of Simon Peter and Judas along with the feet of his other followers. He was faithful and embodied fidelity in relationship to God and his disciples. As the resurrected Christ, Jesus asked Simon, “Do you love me?” He’s helping Peter understand that love is fidelity over time, and this faithful love (agape) is lived out, not merely spoken. It was incumbent upon Peter to learn this, if he were to become the rock on which the church was built. It is a necessary lesson if we are to live by faith.
