How Do We Change the World?

We are making our way through the book Genesis for Normal People by Peter Enns and Jared Byas during Wednesday Night Bible study. Last week the focus was on Noah and the ark so I showed a few clips from one of my favorite movies Evan Almighty. Toward the end of the movie God (played by Morgan Freeman) asks, “So, how do we change the world?” (You just read that in his voice didn’t you?)

"Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." Romans 12:21

Romans chapter 12 is your required reading for the day. You can read it right now.
Go ahead.
Just click the link.
I’ll wait.

There is some great stuff in there. Just about every verse is cross stitch worthy. I think my next craft will have 12:20 on it (which is actually a quote from Proverbs) - "if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.”

Heaping burning coals with kindness, isn't that awesome?

The world is tough. Hatred, malice, greed, and unbearable suffering are coming from all sides. Grace and mercy are so hard to come by and kindness seems to be in short supply. There are days I feel that anger and outrage taking up residence in my own heart.

I shouldn't be so excited about the heaping coals.

This is the true evil that I need to overcome. It is the evil that knocks at the door and tells me that I should be the center of the universe. That my thoughts, my beliefs, my interpretations, my politics, my religion, my denomination, my country, etc. are correct and everyone else on the planet is wrong.

“Overcome evil with good.”

How can I work to do this? Well, I can start by not thinking too much of myself, by knowing that I can't walk through life in isolation, by practicing hospitality, living in harmony and  living in peace with others when possible, by practicing humility, and by loving genuinely. Does this sound familiar? Good. You must have followed my instructions and read Romans 12.

We can't overcome the external evils of the world on our own, but we can work on being better versions of ourselves a little bit each day.

God (in Morgan Freeman’s voice): “So how do we change the world?”

Act of
Random
Kindness at a time

Be blessed church,
